The end of the road

In 2005, an EU directive for End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) was implemented as UK law. This seeks to prevent and limit waste and to improve reuse, recycling and recovery of End of Life Vehicles so that:

  • 85% of an ELV, by weight, is recycled, reused or recovered from January 2006.
  • 95% of an ELV, by weight, is recycled, reused or recovered from January 2015.

Wherever possible, Hyundai uses recycled and recyclable materials in all our vehicles. And for easy classification of materials at the dismantling process, we label all parts weighing over 50g using recognised identification codes, enabling them to be categorised for recycling at the end of a vehicle's life.

Furthermore, as part of our commitment to managing harmful substances contained in vehicle parts and materials more effectively, Hyundai has developed a Recyclability Assessment Information System (RAIS) for our car designers, to help them calculate levels of recyclability and recoverability of new models at the design stage.

Our ELV scheme

We have appointed Cartakeback to manage our ELV scheme through a network of Hyundai Approved Authorised Treatment Facilities. These facilities currently offer a free take-back service for Hyundai vehicles.

As permitted by UK law, they facilities may charge for the disposal of an ELV if the vehicle is not complete, i.e. if the vehicle does not contain its main component parts, in particular the engine, body/chassis, transmission, catalytic converter or wheels, or if the vehicle contains additional waste.

For more information please visit the Cartakeback website at www.cartakeback.com or call 0845 257 32 33.
